Beneath the Surface of My Anxious Thoughts

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Anxiety can be a lot like an iceberg. You see the tip, the obvious stuff, but beneath the surface, there's so much more going on.

Jesus talks about this in Matthew 6. He's not saying 'just be happy' or 'don't worry, it'll all work out.' He's saying 'look at the birds.'

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them.

Matthew 6:25-26

The point isn't that the birds don't have needs. The point is that they don't take on the weight of the world. They trust that their heavenly Father will provide.

So what's beneath the surface of your anxious thoughts? Is it fear of not being enough? Fear of the unknown? Fear of losing control?

God, I feel like I'm drowning in my thoughts. Help me look beneath the surface, to see what's really going on. Help me trust that you're providing, even when I don't see it. Amen.
