Beneath the Surface of Relapse

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.'

Relapse can feel like the ultimate failure. It's the phone call you don't want to make, the conversation you don't want to have, the admission you don't want to make.

But what if relapse is not the end of the story? What if it's a plot twist, a turning point, a chance to re-route?

But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

Paul wrote this from a place of weakness, of struggle, of admission. He wasn't boasting about his strength, his willpower, his ability to 'stay sober'. He was boasting about his weakness, because that's where God's power shows up.

Addiction is a disease, a sickness, a struggle. It's not a moral failing, a character flaw, a personal failing. It's a cry for help, a scream for rescue, a plea for redemption.

God, I'm tired of trying to be strong. I'm tired of pretending to have it all together. Help me admit my weakness, help me surrender my struggles, help me find your power in my brokenness. Amen.
