Envy in the Shadows of Our Hearts

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Jealousy is a feeling we often try to hide, even from ourselves. It's the twinge when someone else succeeds, the resentment when someone gets what we want.

The Bible doesn't shy away from addressing envy. In Proverbs, we're told that envy rots the bones, implying a deep, internal decay.

“A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.”

Proverbs 14:30

This isn't just about how we feel towards others; it's about our relationship with God. Are we trusting Him with our lives, or are we comparing ourselves to others?

The biblical story of Joseph and his brothers shows us how jealousy can destroy relationships and lead to harmful actions.

God, I confess my jealousy. It's ugly and it hurts. Help me trust You with my life, to find peace in Your presence, and to celebrate the successes of others. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
