When the Future Feels Like Fog

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Jeremiah was writing to a people exiled in Babylon. Their city lay in ruins, their temple gone, their future erased. Yet God gave them a promise that seemed impossible at the time.

The verse is often quoted in graduation speeches or Instagram captions. It sounds like a guarantee. But the original audience heard a God who knew their present pain and still dared to speak of hope.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you.

Jeremiah 29:11-13

Notice two things: the promise is tied to a call to prayer, and it follows a command to seek the welfare of the city. God isn't offering a vague feel-good line. He is inviting active participation.

When the future feels like fog, start with a small step that you can actually see. It could be a 10-minute walk, a coffee with a friend, or a therapist appointment. Those tiny actions push the fog aside enough to see the next step.

You don't have to have the whole roadmap. You just need to trust that the one who made the fog is also the one who can clear it. That trust grows when you practice the habit of showing up.

God, the future looks blurry and scary. I don't have all the answers. Help me take one small step today, and trust that you are with me in the fog. Give me the courage to call on you, even when I can't see the whole path. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
