Navigating Identity in the Gray Areas

Written by

“The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

Identity is complex. It's the intersection of our past, our passions, and our relationships. But what happens when those things contradict each other?

The Bible doesn't shy away from complexity. David, a king and a musician, wrote about the tension between his faith and his emotions.

“Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me. The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O God, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”

Psalm 138:7-8

Notice the phrase 'in the midst of trouble.' That's where our identities are formed, in the gray areas, not in the easy answers.

Embracing our complexities means embracing the unknown. It means trusting that God's purpose for us is bigger than our current understanding of ourselves.

God, I don't have it all figured out. My identity feels like a puzzle with missing pieces. Help me trust your purpose for me, even when it's hard to see. Help me navigate the gray areas with your steadfast love. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
