Navigating Marriage When It Gets Real

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Marriage is not just a highlight reel. It's the daily, messy, beautiful choice to love and be loved, even when it's hard.

The Bible doesn't shy away from the hard parts. In Ephesians, Paul writes to a community of believers, including married couples, about how to navigate the tough times.

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Ephesians 4:2-3

Notice the verbs: be humble, be gentle, be patient. These aren't feelings, they're choices. Choices we make every day, in every conversation, in every conflict.

So what does this look like in real life? It looks like choosing to listen, even when you disagree. It looks like choosing to forgive, even when it's hard. It looks like choosing to love, even when it feels like the last thing you want to do.

God, help me to choose love, even when it's hard. Help me to be humble, gentle, and patient, not just when it feels natural, but when it feels like the last thing I want to do. Meet me in the messy, beautiful middle of my marriage. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
