When Anxious Thoughts Loop at 3am

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

You're lying awake, it's 3am, and your brain is a browser with too many tabs open. Thoughts are looping, and you can't seem to close them.

David wrote Psalm 63 in the desert, a place of physical and emotional dryness. He wasn't in a quiet moment of contemplation. He was in a place of desperation, seeking God's presence.

On my bed I remember you; I think of you through the watches of the night. Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 63:6-8

Notice the verb 'cling.' It's not a casual friendship. It's a desperate, white-knuckle grip. That's what you do when the thoughts are racing, and the night feels dark.

You don't have to quiet your mind to meet God. You can meet him in the noise. In the looping thoughts, in the desperation, in the 3am wakefulness.

God, my mind is a mess. Thoughts are racing, and I'm tired. I cling to you, not because I'm strong, but because I'm weak. Meet me in this noise, in this darkness. Uphold me with your right hand. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
