When Heartbreak Hits Like Winter

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Heartbreak feels like a cold wind you didn't sign up for. It drags you into a night that seems endless. You're not alone in that dark.

David wrote Psalm 34 while he was fleeing Saul, hiding in a cave. He'd just escaped a life-or-death chase. The words come from a man who literally feared for his breath.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:18

Notice the phrase "close to." It isn't a distant comfort. It's immediate, like a hand on a shivering shoulder. God's proximity isn't a promise that pain will vanish. It's a promise that He's there while you sit with it.

You might be tempted to distract, to binge, to numb. Those are okay for a moment. But the Bible also gives a practical next step: name the ache. Write it down. Let the words sit where the feeling lives.

God, my heart feels frozen. I can't pretend the pain isn't real. I'm naming the hurt and letting it sit. Please stay close, even when I can't feel your warmth. Help me lean into the breath you give me. Amen.
