When Recovery Feels Like a Marathon

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Recovery is not a sprint. It's a long, hard road with ups and downs. Some days you'll feel like you're making progress, and some days you'll feel like you're taking two steps back.

The apostle Paul knew a thing or two about struggle. He had a thorn in his side, a constant reminder of his weakness. But instead of trying to hide it or overcome it on his own, he learned to boast in it.

To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

Paul's weakness was not something to be ashamed of, but something to be honest about. And it's the same with our struggles with addiction. We don't have to hide them or try to overcome them on our own. We can bring them to God, and let his power be made perfect in our weakness.

Recovery is not about being strong, it's about being honest. It's about acknowledging our weaknesses and our struggles, and letting God's power work in us.

God, I'm tired of trying to do this on my own. I'm tired of pretending like I have it all together. Help me to be honest about my weaknesses, and to let your power be made perfect in them. Give me the strength to keep going, even when it feels like a marathon. Amen.
