When Sorrow Feels Like a Weight

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?'

Grief can be a lonely thing. Even with people around, the weight of sorrow can feel crushing, like nobody truly gets it.

The Psalmist writes about tears being their food. It's a vivid picture of a life consumed by grief.

My tears have been my food day and night, while people say to me all day long, 'Where is your God?' These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go to the house of God under the protection of the Mighty One.

Psalm 42:3-4

Notice the question people ask: 'Where is your God?' It's a question that can feel like a stab, implying that if you were more faithful, you wouldn't be hurting.

But the Psalmist doesn't try to justify or explain. They simply state their pain, and remember the times they felt God's presence.

God, my sorrow feels like a weight I'm carrying alone. I wish people understood. I wish I understood. Help me pour out my soul to you, even when it feels like tears are my only food. Meet me in this grief. Amen.
