This psalm pictures God present at the sickbed itself. Sustaining is daily help, even before any restoration comes.

Psalm 73:26

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.”

The psalmist is honest that the body and even courage can fail. Hope is placed in God, not in how strong you feel.

2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Paul wrote this after beatings, shipwrecks, and danger, so light trouble is not dismissive. It is measured against an eternal weight of glory.

2 Corinthians 12:9

“But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

Paul asked three times for his thorn to be removed. God's answer was grace for the weakness, not always removal of it.

Tell God plainly what you want healed. Then ask for enough grace for today, whatever the answer is.

Lamentations 3:21-23

“Yet this I call to mind and therefore I have hope: Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations is written in the middle of devastation. Hope here is a choice to call something to mind, not a feeling that arrives on its own.

Each morning this week, before checking symptoms or messages, call one of God's mercies to mind and thank him for it.

Romans 15:13

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Paul calls God the God of hope. Hope is something God fills you with by the Spirit, not something you must produce while sick.

Ask someone to pray this verse over you by name. Receiving prayer is a way of letting hope be given to you.

Psalm 42:11

“Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

The psalmist talks back to their own discouragement. Downcast feelings are allowed, and hope is still pointed toward God.

When discouragement hits after bad news, ask yourself the psalm's question honestly. Then say: I will yet praise him.
