Beyond the Darkness of My Mind

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Depression can make you feel like you're drowning in your own thoughts. It's hard to see a way out when the darkness feels so overwhelming.

The Psalmist knew this feeling. He wrote about it in Psalm 42. He's asking himself why he's so down, why he's so disturbed. He's not pretending like everything is okay when it's not.

Why, my soul, are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Psalm 42:11

The Psalmist is telling himself to put his hope in God. Not because his circumstances have changed, but because God is still good, still present, still his Savior.

Hope is not the same as happiness. Hope is not the absence of pain. Hope is the presence of God in the midst of pain.

God, I feel lost in my own mind. I feel like I'm drowning in my thoughts. Remind me that you're still here, still good, still my Savior. Help me put my hope in you, not in my circumstances. Amen.
