Beyond the Labels We Wear

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

We wear labels like badges. Student, athlete, artist, introvert, extrovert. They help us find our tribes, but they can also define us.

Peter writes to a group of people who were once not a people, but are now a chosen people. They were scattered, but now they're a community.

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

1 Peter 2:9-10

Notice the shift. From darkness to light, from not a people to a people. This is our true identity, one that goes beyond the labels we wear.

What if our identity wasn't defined by what we do, but by who we are in Christ? What if we found our worth not in our achievements, but in our belonging to God?

God, help me to see myself as you see me, beyond the labels I wear. Help me to find my identity in you, not in what I do. I want to know my true worth, to know that I am chosen, royal, and holy. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
