Embracing the Gentle Art of Self Comfort

Written by

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We often look for comfort in all the wrong places, trying to fill the void with temporary solutions that leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled.

But what if comfort wasn't just something we found, but also something we learned to give ourselves? What if we could learn to be gentle with ourselves, to offer ourselves the same kindness and compassion we so readily offer to others?

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Jesus' invitation to come to him and find rest is not just a spiritual concept, but a practical one. It's an invitation to learn from him, to learn how to be gentle and humble in heart, and to find rest for our souls.

So how do we start embracing the gentle art of self comfort? We start by being kind to ourselves, by acknowledging our weaknesses and limitations, and by learning to say no to the things that drain us and yes to the things that nourish us.

God, help me learn to be gentle with myself, to offer myself the same kindness and compassion I offer to others. Help me find rest for my soul, and teach me the gentle art of self comfort. Amen.
