Embracing the Weakness That Precedes Strength

Written by

“But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

We often think of strength as the absence of weakness, but what if our weaknesses are actually the doorway to real strength?

Paul, in his second letter to the Corinthians, writes about the thorn in his flesh, a weakness he prayed for God to remove, but instead, God told him that His power is made perfect in weakness.

“But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

2 Corinthians 12:9-10

This is a radical idea, that our weaknesses can be a source of strength, not because we are strong, but because God is strong in our weakness.

So, what does it mean to embrace our weakness, to boast in them, so that Christ's power may rest on us?

God, I am weak, and I am tired of trying to be strong on my own. Help me to see my weaknesses as opportunities for Your power to be made perfect. Give me the courage to boast in my weaknesses, so that Your strength may rest on me. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
