Exhaustion Is Not a Bad Word

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

We often view exhaustion as a personal failing, a sign of not being able to keep up. But what if it's actually a signal that we need to slow down?

Jesus' words in Matthew 11:28-30 are not just an invitation to rest, but a command. He doesn't say 'come to me if you're just a little tired,' but 'come to me, all you who are weary and burdened.'

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

Notice the contrast between the burden we carry and the yoke Jesus offers. Our burdens are heavy, but His yoke is easy. It's not about being weak or strong, but about recognizing our limitations and surrendering to His care.

So what does it look like to take Jesus' yoke upon us? It means acknowledging our exhaustion, not trying to push through it. It means prioritizing rest, not just as a luxury, but as a necessity.

God, I'm tired. I'm exhausted. I'm burned out. Help me see that as a signal to slow down, not a failure. Help me take Your yoke upon me and learn from You. Give me rest for my soul. Amen.
