Navigating the Green-Eyed Monster

Written by

“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice.”

Jealousy can feel consuming. It's that tight feeling in your chest when someone else succeeds. You scroll through social media and suddenly, your accomplishments feel inadequate.

James, in the New Testament, points out how envy leads to chaos. This isn't just about feeling bad for not measuring up. It's a serious thing that affects our thoughts and actions.

“For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere.”

James 3:16-17

What's the antidote to jealousy? It's perspective and gratitude. Recognizing that everyone has their journey helps. Instead of comparing, we can celebrate others while also acknowledging our own progress.

Jealousy tells us lies. It says we are not enough and that there's only a limited amount of success to go around. This is not true. There's room for everyone to thrive.

God, I'm struggling with feelings of jealousy. It makes me feel small and inadequate. Help me to see the truth about my worth and the unique path you have for me. Teach me to celebrate others and to find joy in my own journey. Amen.
