Prayer When Words Fail

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.

Sometimes prayer feels like a language we've forgotten how to speak. We know we need to pray, but the words won't come.

The apostle Paul wrote Romans from a place of deep struggle, and in it, he admits that sometimes we don't know what to pray for. But he doesn't leave us there.

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God's people in accordance with the will of God.

Romans 8:26-27

The Holy Spirit prays for us, even when we can't find the words. This isn't a replacement for our prayers, but a reminder that our prayers are never alone.

So what does it look like to pray when words fail? It looks like showing up, even when it feels silent. It looks like trusting that the Spirit is praying, even when we're not.

God, I don't have the words. I'm struggling to pray. But I'm showing up, and I'm trusting that you're praying for me, even when I'm not. Help me to trust in your presence, even in the silence. Amen.
