When Anger Feels Like a Broken Record

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

Anger can feel like a song on repeat. The same lyrics, the same melody, the same frustrating feeling that you can't move on.

The thing about anger is that it's not always bad. Sometimes it's a sign that something needs to change. But when it gets stuck, when it becomes the only song you can hear, that's when it starts to hurt.

In your anger do not sin. Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, and do not give the devil a foothold.

Ephesians 4:26-27

Paul writes this to the Ephesians, a community dealing with their own set of problems. He's not saying 'don't be angry.' He's saying 'don't let the anger own you.'

So what does it look like to deal with anger in a healthy way? It looks like acknowledging it, like taking a step back, like recognizing that you're not alone in this feeling.

God, my anger feels like a weight I'm carrying. I don't know how to put it down. Help me see that you're bigger than this feeling, that you're not intimidated by my frustration. Meet me in the midst of this anger, and show me a way forward. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
