When Fear Feels Like a Shadow

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.

Fear shows up when you step into the unknown. It can feel like a shape looming behind you, growing bigger the longer you stare at it.

David wrote Psalm 56 while fleeing from the Philistines. He was a young king on the run, hiding in caves. The Psalm is not a polished poem from a safe throne. It's a raw cry from a night of real danger.

When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

Psalm 56:3-4

Notice the shift. First he admits fear. Then he flips the script: trust becomes the response, not a feeling you have to beat.

The Bible doesn't promise a fear-free life. It offers a habit. A habit of naming the fear, then handing it to God like a note at a desk.

Start small. When a fear pops up, write it on a sticky note. Put the note somewhere visible. Then, in your own words, say, "I trust God with this." Leave the note for a day. Watch how the shape starts to shrink.

God, I'm scared of the unknown. I'm scared of failing and of being seen as weak. I hand those fears to you, even when I don't feel brave enough to trust. Help me keep naming them and letting you hold them. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
