When Forgiveness Feels Like a Heavy Backpack

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

You open this because someone hurt you. The ache lives in your chest. It feels like you're carrying a backpack full of sand.

Paul wrote Colossians while he was in a Roman prison, probably around AD 60. He wasn't giving a feel-good lecture. He was writing to a church that was dealing with real conflict, betrayal, and the threat of Roman oppression.

Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.

Colossians 3:13

Notice the phrase "as the Lord forgave you." It's not a suggestion. It's a reminder of the scale. The forgiveness you received was not a small gift. It was a radical, unpaid, unconditional release.

That doesn't mean you have to erase the pain. It means you can choose to set down the sand, even if the weight stays for a while. You can start by naming one specific thing you're holding onto.

Therapy, medication, or a trusted friend can help you process the hurt. Forgiveness is not a solo sprint. It's a series of small steps, like taking off one strap at a time.

God, I'm carrying something heavy that I can't move on my own. Help me see the grace you showed me and let that shape how I respond. Give me the patience to untie each knot, even when it hurts. Amen.
