When Anger Feels Like a Fire Alarm

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.

Anger can feel like a fire alarm, loud and insistent. It interrupts everything. When someone hurts you, or when life feels unfair, anger kicks in. It's natural, but it can spiral quickly.

The apostle Paul wrote Ephesians while dealing with real people and their real issues. He knew emotions run high, especially among those who claim to care about each other. His advice? Don't let anger control you.

In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry.

Ephesians 4:26

Paul isn't saying anger is wrong. He's saying to handle it wisely. Holding onto anger can lead to bitterness and regrets. It's like trying to carry a heavy backpack,it just weighs you down.

So how do we deal with anger? Acknowledge it first. Sit with it. Understand what's triggering it. Is it hurt? Disappointment? Injustice? Anger can signal that something needs attention. It's a warning light, not a destination.

God, anger feels heavy, like a storm brewing inside. I don't want to be defined by it. Help me understand what lies beneath my anger. Teach me to express it in ways that heal rather than harm. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
