When Letting Go Feels Like Losing

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Forgiveness can feel like a lose-lose situation. We're asked to let go of the one thing that makes us feel like we're still in control: our anger, our resentment, our hurt.

But what if forgiveness isn't about winning or losing? What if it's about freedom?

For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

Matthew 6:14-15

Jesus isn't saying we have to forgive and forget. He's saying we have to let go of the debt we think someone owes us. We have to release the need for justice, for revenge, for validation.

That doesn't mean it's easy. It doesn't mean it's fair. But it does mean we get to start again, to start anew, to start unencumbered by the weight of our own anger.

God, I don't know how to let go. I don't know how to forgive. I don't know how to release the anger and the hurt. But I want to. I want to be free. Meet me in the letting go, and show me what it means to forgive, not for their sake, but for mine. Amen.
