When Sorrow Feels Like a Weight

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Grief is a weight that's hard to put into words. It's the feeling of being lost in a crowd, the ache of an empty chair, the sound of silence where laughter used to be.

David wrote Psalm 34 from a place of darkness. He was hiding from King Saul, who wanted him dead. But in the midst of that fear and uncertainty, David found comfort in God's presence.

The righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

Psalm 34:17-18

The word 'close' is important. It's not that God is far away, watching from a distance. He's close, like a friend who sits with you in the dark.

You don't have to put on a brave face or pretend that everything is okay. You can be honest about your pain, and God will meet you there.

God, I'm tired of carrying this weight. I'm tired of feeling alone in my grief. Meet me in this dark place, and remind me that you're close to the brokenhearted. Help me feel your presence, even when it's hard to see. Amen.
