Bible Verses for When You're Scared

Being scared is not a failure of faith. These verses meet you in the fear and remind you that God is near, strong, and paying attention.

Written by

If you searched scripture for when you are scared, something may be pressing on you right now. Maybe it is a test result, a hard conversation, a noise in the night, a money problem, or a fear you cannot even name. Fear can make your heart race and your thoughts spin, and it can make God feel far away. Scripture does not shame scared people. Again and again, God speaks to frightened people with the same words: do not fear, for I am with you. Those words are not a scolding. They are an invitation to lean on someone stronger than what scares you. Below you will find NIV verses for when you are scared, each with context and one practical way to bring it into this moment.

How are you feeling right now?

Bible verses for this situation

Psalm 56:3

,NIV
“When I am afraid, I put my trust in you.”

David wrote this psalm when he was captured by enemies in Gath. He does not pretend he is not afraid. He names the fear and chooses where to put his trust.

Say this verse out loud, slowly, three times. Notice that it starts with when I am afraid, not if. Your fear is expected, and trust can sit right beside it.

Isaiah 41:10

,NIV
“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

God spoke these words to his people when they felt small and threatened by powerful nations. The reason not to fear is not that the danger is fake, but that God is present.

Write down the one thing scaring you most right now. Under it, write I am with you. Keep it where you will see it today.

Psalm 34:4

,NIV
“I sought the LORD, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.”

David wrote this after escaping a frightening situation. He looks back and testifies that seeking God made a real difference when he was afraid.

Take two minutes to tell God exactly what you are scared of, in plain words. Seeking him can be as simple as an honest sentence.

Joshua 1:9

,NIV
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua was stepping into leadership after Moses died, facing a huge unknown. God's command to be courageous rests on a promise: I will be with you wherever you go.

Identify one small brave step you can take today, like making the call or asking for help. Take it while reminding yourself God goes with you.

John 14:27

,NIV
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

Jesus spoke these words to his friends the night before his crucifixion, knowing they were about to be terrified. He offered them his own peace, not a quick fix.

Breathe in slowly while praying, Jesus, give me your peace. Breathe out while praying, I do not have to carry this alone. Repeat for one minute.

Psalm 23:4

,NIV
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

The shepherd psalm does not promise there will be no dark valleys. It promises the Shepherd walks through them with his sheep, guiding and protecting them.

If you are scared at night, keep this verse by your bed. Picture the Shepherd beside you in the dark, not waiting on the other side of it.

2 Timothy 1:7

,NIV
“For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.”

Paul wrote this to Timothy, a young leader who seems to have struggled with timidity. Paul reminds him that God's Spirit gives strength, love, and a steady mind.

Ask the Holy Spirit for one of these three today: power to act, love to look beyond yourself, or self-discipline to keep your thoughts from spiraling.

The thread running through these verses.

When you are scared, Scripture does not tell you to pretend. It shows people like David naming their fear and choosing trust, and it repeats God's promise to be present: I am with you. Courage in the Bible grows from God's nearness, not from the absence of fear.

This week, try this.

Pick one verse from this page and carry it with you today, on your phone lock screen or a sticky note. When fear rises, pause, breathe slowly, and pray it. Tell one trusted person what is scaring you so you are not holding it alone. If fear is constant, comes with panic attacks, or keeps you from daily life, please reach out to a doctor, counselor, or pastor. Getting help is a wise and faithful step.

Common questions.

What scripture should I read when I am scared?

Start with Psalm 56:3, Isaiah 41:10, and Psalm 23:4. They name fear honestly and point you to God's presence. John 14:27 and Joshua 1:9 are also strong verses to pray when you feel afraid.

Is it a sin to be scared?

No. Feeling scared is a normal human response. David, Elijah, and even Jesus in Gethsemane felt deep distress. The Bible invites you to bring your fear to God, not to hide it or feel ashamed of it.

Why does the Bible say do not be afraid so often?

God speaks those words to frightened people again and again, usually followed by a promise like I am with you. It is a comfort, not a scolding. The reason not to fear is God's presence and care.

What is a short Bible verse for when you are scared?

Psalm 56:3 is one of the shortest and most memorable: When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. It is easy to repeat in the moment when fear hits.

How do I pray when I am scared?

Keep it simple and honest. Try: God, I am scared about this. I do not know what will happen. Please be with me, give me your peace, and show me the next small step. Then rest in Psalm 34:4.

What if I am scared all the time?

Constant fear can be a sign of an anxiety disorder or trauma, and that is not a faith failure. Keep praying and reading Scripture, and also talk with a doctor or licensed counselor. God often brings healing through wise people and good care.
