Bible Verses About Forgiveness When It Is Hard

Some hurts are too deep to just let go. These verses do not rush you or shame you. They show you where the strength to forgive comes from.

Written by

If you searched for Bible verses about forgiveness when it is hard, you probably already know you are supposed to forgive. The problem is that the hurt is real, the memory keeps coming back, and the person may not even be sorry. Maybe it was a parent, a spouse, a friend, or someone at church. Scripture takes forgiveness seriously, but it does not pretend it is easy. Jesus forgave from the cross, Peter asked how many times was enough, and Paul pointed again and again to the forgiveness God has already shown us. Forgiveness is often a process more than a single moment, and God gives grace for each step. Below you will find NIV verses about forgiveness when it is hard, each with context and one small, honest step you can take today.

How are you feeling right now?

Bible verses for this situation

Colossians 3:13

,NIV
“Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you.”

Paul admits that real grievances happen between people. He does not say the hurt is imaginary. He grounds forgiveness in the way the Lord has already forgiven us.

Before you think about the person who hurt you, spend a few minutes remembering what God has forgiven in you. Let that be the starting point, not a feeling you have to force.

Matthew 18:21-22

,NIV
“Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, "Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?" Jesus answered, "I tell you, not seven times, but seventy-seven times."”

Peter thought seven times was generous. Jesus answers that forgiveness is not a scorecard. It also hints that forgiving is something we may need to do again and again, even for the same hurt.

If the anger comes back after you thought you had forgiven, do not assume you failed. Simply forgive again today, and tell God: I am choosing this again.

Luke 23:34

,NIV
“Jesus said, "Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing." And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.”

Jesus prayed this while he was being crucified and mocked. His forgiveness was not based on anyone apologizing. He brought his request to the Father in the middle of unimaginable pain.

If you cannot yet say I forgive you, try praying what Jesus prayed: Father, forgive them. Let God carry what you cannot carry yet.

Romans 12:21

,NIV
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Paul has just told believers not to take revenge and to leave justice with God. Refusing to let someone's wrong turn you bitter is a way of overcoming it.

Choose one way to refuse revenge today, even a small one, like not repeating the story to someone new or not checking up on the person to feed your anger.

Matthew 6:14-15

,NIV
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.”

Jesus says this right after teaching the Lord's Prayer. He shows that receiving God's mercy and extending mercy to others are deeply connected in the life of a disciple.

Pray the Lord's Prayer slowly today. When you reach forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors, pause and name the person you are struggling to forgive.

Psalm 147:3

,NIV
“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”

Forgiveness and healing are connected but not the same. This psalm reminds us that God tends to the wounds others leave, not only to the wrongs we need to release.

Ask God to heal the specific wound, not just to help you forgive. Name what the hurt cost you, like trust, safety, or years, and bring that loss to him.

2 Corinthians 12:9

,NIV
“But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

Paul pleaded for God to remove a painful struggle. God answered with grace instead. When forgiveness feels beyond you, his strength works best where yours runs out.

Tell God plainly: I cannot forgive this on my own. Then ask for enough grace for today only, not for the whole journey at once.

The thread running through these verses.

Scripture is honest that forgiveness can be costly and that grievances are real. It grounds our forgiveness in the forgiveness God has already given us, shows Jesus forgiving in the middle of suffering, and teaches that forgiving may need to happen again and again. Forgiveness releases revenge and leaves justice with God. It does not mean the wrong was acceptable, and it does not require trusting someone unsafe. God also heals the wounds, and his grace is enough when our own strength runs out.

This week, try this.

Read Colossians 3:13 and Luke 23:34. Write down the name of the person you are struggling to forgive and one specific way they hurt you. Then pray honestly: God, I want to want to forgive. Give me grace for today. If the anger returns later, repeat the prayer without judging yourself. Forgiveness does not mean staying in an abusive or unsafe situation or rebuilding trust right away. If the hurt involves abuse or trauma, a counselor can help you process it safely. If you are in crisis in the US, call or text 988.

Common questions.

What does the Bible say about forgiving when it is hard?

Colossians 3:13 says to forgive as the Lord forgave you, and Matthew 18:21-22 shows that forgiveness may need to happen again and again. 2 Corinthians 12:9 reminds us that God's grace is sufficient when we feel too weak.

Do I have to forgive someone who is not sorry?

Jesus prayed Father, forgive them while he was being crucified, before anyone apologized. Forgiveness is releasing revenge and leaving justice with God. Reconciliation and rebuilt trust are different and usually require the other person to change.

Is it a sin to struggle to forgive?

Struggling is not the same as refusing. Peter himself asked Jesus how much forgiveness was enough. Bringing your struggle honestly to God and asking for help is part of the process.

Does forgiving mean I have to trust them again?

No. Forgiveness and trust are different. You can forgive someone and still keep healthy boundaries, especially if they are unsafe or have not changed. Trust is rebuilt over time when there is real change.

What is a short Bible verse about hard forgiveness?

Colossians 3:13 says: Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Luke 23:34 is another: Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.

What should I pray when I cannot forgive?

Try praying: God, this hurt is deep and I cannot forgive it on my own. I give you my desire for revenge. Heal what was broken in me, and give me grace to take one step toward forgiveness today.
