Real Talk on Marriage When It's Hard

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Marriage isn't always the fairy tale we see on social media. Some days feel more like a reality show gone wrong. Arguments over small stuff, misunderstanding each other, feeling distant. If you're navigating these waters, you're not alone.

Ephesians was written by Paul to a community figuring out how to live together in love and unity. This wasn't an easy task. They were dealing with cultural differences, personal baggage, and real conflicts. Sound familiar?

“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.”

Ephesians 4:2-3

Paul's words offer a roadmap. Humility and gentleness. Patience and love. When things get tough, it's easy to let irritation take over. But what if we made a conscious effort to listen first? To respond with kindness, even when we're hurt?

It's about progress, not perfection. If today felt like an uphill battle, that's okay. Every conversation, every effort, is a step towards healing the bond. Remember, it's not about winning; it's about understanding each other better.

God, marriage can be challenging and I often forget to approach it with love and patience. Help me be humble and kind. Guide me in my conversations and actions, especially when I feel frustrated. Remind me that we are in this together. Amen.

When this hits in real life.
