The Thousand and One Ways Stress Hits

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

Stress is like that uninvited guest who shows up at the worst possible time. Maybe it's the looming deadlines, the social expectations, or just the pressure to keep it all together. You're not alone in feeling this way.

Jesus wasn't just about spirituality. He understood the weight of the world. The verse in Matthew was spoken to a crowd overwhelmed by religious rules and societal demands. He offered them rest. Not just a nap, but a break from the burdens they carried.

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Matthew 11:28-30

This is an invitation to let go. It's okay to feel overwhelmed. You don't have to have it all figured out. Sometimes that means saying no, setting boundaries, or even asking for help. It's okay to prioritize your mental health.

What if you treated stress like a signal rather than a failure? A signal that it's time to pause, breathe, and check in with yourself. Think of stress as an opportunity to reassess what you truly need.

God, today feels heavy. I'm carrying a lot, and it's hard to see a way through. Help me to recognize when I need to rest and when to reach out. I know I can come to you with my burdens. Thank you for offering me relief. Amen.
