Beyond the Empty Chair

By the Pace with Grace editorial team

God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing.

Loneliness can feel like an empty chair at the table, a reminder that someone is missing. It can be a heavy feeling, a constant ache that doesn't seem to go away.

But what if that empty chair is not a reminder of what's lacking, but an invitation to fill the space with something new? What if it's a chance to redefine what family means, to find comfort in unexpected places?

Father to the fatherless, defender of widows, this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing.

Psalm 68:5-6

The psalmist writes about God setting the lonely in families. This is not just about physical family, but about the community, the support system that we all need. It's about finding your people, your tribe, your sense of belonging.

So, what does it mean to find comfort in loneliness? It means embracing the empty space, not trying to fill it with distractions or temporary fixes. It means being still, being quiet, and listening for the whisper of God's presence.

God, I feel the weight of loneliness, the ache of the empty chair. Help me to see it not as a reminder of what's lacking, but as an invitation to fill the space with something new. Give me the courage to be still, to listen for your presence, and to find comfort in the unexpected places. Amen.
