Embracing Vulnerability as Strength

Written by

“But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.”

We often think of strength as the ability to power through, to overcome, to be invincible. But what if strength is actually found in vulnerability?

The apostle Paul wrote about his own weaknesses, and how he boasted in them, because it was in those moments that he experienced God's power and grace.

“To keep me from becoming conceited because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”

2 Corinthians 12:7-10

It's counterintuitive, but embracing our vulnerabilities can actually be a sign of strength, not weakness. It takes courage to admit our limitations, to ask for help, to be honest about our struggles.

So what does it look like to embrace vulnerability as strength? It means being willing to take risks, to be open and honest, to trust that God's power is sufficient for us, even in our weaknesses.

God, I want to be strong, but I'm tired of pretending to be invincible. Help me to see that my weaknesses are not something to be ashamed of, but opportunities for your power to be made perfect in me. Give me the courage to be vulnerable, to take risks, and to trust in your sufficiency. Amen.
