When Faith Is the Last Thing You Feel

Key Verse · Mark 9:24 (NIV)
“I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”
It's okay to say it out loud: sometimes faith feels like a distant memory, and doubt is all that's left. It's not that you want to doubt, it's just that the questions are louder than the answers.
The father in Mark 9 knew this feeling. His son was possessed, and he'd tried everything. He came to Jesus as a last resort, and his words are some of the most honest in the Bible.
“'If you can do anything, take pity on us and help us.' 'If you can?' said Jesus. 'Everything is possible for one who believes.' Immediately the boy's father exclaimed, 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!'”
He didn't say, 'I believe.' He said, 'I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief.' It's a prayer of tension, of paradox. It's a recognition that faith and doubt are not mutually exclusive, but intertwined.
It's okay to pray this prayer. It's okay to admit that your faith is struggling, that the doubts are real. Because in that admission, you're acknowledging that you need help, that you can't do it on your own.
